Agios Vasileios, Laconia

Agios Vasileios is a Mycenaean palace complex near Xerokambi with ruins of a central courtyard surrounded by administrative buildings arranged across a sloped hillside. The structures span multiple levels and reveal how this important settlement was laid out.

The palace was active during the middle Bronze Age and experienced multiple destruction phases before final abandonment. Archaeological evidence suggests this site was connected to trade networks and political centers of the Mycenaean world.

The site reveals everyday life through pottery and tools left behind by its ancient inhabitants. These objects show how people here worked, cooked, and organized their daily routines.

The site sits on a hillside and can be challenging to navigate, so sturdy footwear and extra time for exploration are important. Limited facilities are available on-site, so bring plenty of water and sun protection for your visit.

The excavation has uncovered written tablets with administrative records in an early script form. These documents rank among Europe's oldest written evidence.
