Les Rouies, Alpine summit in Écrins massif, France
Les Rouies is an Alpine summit in the Ecrins massif with an elevation of approximately 3,600 meters (11,800 feet). Its plateau above 3,400 meters (11,150 feet) is shaped by glaciers and sits entirely within Ecrins National Park.
The mountain formed at the geographic boundary between Isère and Hautes-Alpes departments, marking limits that shaped local communities for generations. Mountaineers have pursued expeditions in this region for centuries, making it a long-established destination in the Alps.
Mountain guides share their expertise of Les Rouies with climbers throughout the year, maintaining French mountaineering traditions in the region.
The ascent requires a two-day expedition with an overnight stay at Pigeonnier refuge situated around 2,400 meters (7,900 feet). Proper footwear and experience with glacier travel are essential, as the route crosses ice and rocky terrain.
The route passes through a rocky corridor with technical passages before reaching the extensive glacial plateau. This combination of rock and ice climbing makes the ascent a varied and demanding experience.
