Summit of Vallon des Étages

The Vallon des Étages is an alpine peak standing at 3,564 meters within the Écrins National Park. Its rocky ridges and slopes display the geological character typical of the French Alps, with sharp formations that define the terrain.

This summit received its first recorded ascent on June 27, 1878, when F. Perrin and André Salvador de Quatrefages reached the top with local guides. This moment marked the beginning of its recorded climbing history during the golden age of alpine exploration.

This peak draws mountaineers from across the region who gather to share techniques and mountain lore. Local guides have maintained traditions that shape how climbers approach the alpine environment.

Climbing gear and solid physical fitness are necessary for a successful ascent of this peak. Summer months offer the best conditions, while snow and ice create significant challenges during other seasons.

The northeast ridge route from Refuge du Carrelet offers technical climbing pitches that test mountaineers throughout the approach. This less traveled variation provides a different experience from other paths to the summit.
