Lac de Trécolpas, lake in France
Lac de Trécolpas is a mountain lake situated around 2,150 meters (7,050 ft) high in the Mercantour area near Saint-Martin-Vésubie, surrounded by rocky peaks and dense forest. The clear water reflects the sky and surrounding mountains, while the lake sits in an open valley enclosed by rock and alpine vegetation.
The lake served for centuries as a resting point on ancient mountain paths used by shepherds and travelers moving through these valleys. During the 20th century, early mountaineers explored the region and gradually made the site known to hikers.
The hike starts from the upper Boréon parking lot and takes about four hours on a marked trail with moderate climbing. Good hiking boots, plenty of water, snacks, and a first aid kit are essential, along with checking the weather forecast before heading out.
The lake sits at the boundary between forested valleys and open alpine terrain, home to rare mountain wildlife such as ibex and chamois. These animals often come to the shore at dusk to drink, and patient visitors may spot them if they watch quietly from a distance.
