Pic de la Fossa del Gegant

Pic de la Fossa del Gegant is a mountain summit in the Pyrenees marking the border between Spain and France, reaching approximately 2,800 meters in elevation. The rocky peak stands above the valleys surrounding Queralbs on the Spanish side and Fontpédrouse on the French side.

The mountain has marked the boundary between France and Spain since the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659 established their shared frontier. This location became the physical division point between the two nations.

The name means Giant's Pit Peak, coming from local stories about legendary creatures said to inhabit the Pyrenean mountains long ago. Hikers passing through this area still speak of these tales today.

Hikers can reach the peak via marked trails from Queralbs in Spain or Fontpédrouse in France, typically during warmer months when conditions are most favorable. The terrain is steep and weather can change quickly, so visitors should wear proper footwear and bring layers.

On clear days, the summit offers direct views of Catalonia stretching across the Spanish side and the ridge systems of French Pyrénées-Orientales on the opposite slope. The contrast between the two landscapes visible from this single point reveals how geography shaped the border itself.
