Bastiments, Mountain summit in Eastern Pyrenees, France
Bastiments is a mountain summit rising to 2881 meters at the border between France and Spain in the Eastern Pyrenees. The peak is composed of gneiss and situated in alpine terrain with steep slopes and open ridge areas.
The gneiss formations originated approximately 470 million years ago when magmatic processes transformed the existing sedimentary layers. This ancient geological history shapes the character of the ridge system today.
The summit connects the communities of Setcases, Queralbs, and Fontpédrouse, serving as a meeting point where French and Spanish cultures intersect. Visitors from both sides regularly use this shared mountain space for hiking and recreation.
The peak is accessible via mountaineering routes, with Vallter 2000 ski station on the French side offering starting points and mountain facilities. Visitors should expect variable alpine weather conditions and challenging terrain.
Giant quartz veins cut through the gneiss formations, representing the largest structures of their kind in the Pyrenees. These striking geological features make the mountain particularly interesting for mineral collectors and geologists.
