Pic de Racó Gros, Mountain summit in Fontpédrouse, France
Pic de Racó Gros is a mountain in Fontpédrouse located in the eastern Pyrenees, rising to 2,782 meters above sea level. The peak serves as a dominant point in this mountain range and can be reached via established marked trails.
For centuries, the mountain served as a key reference point for shepherds and travelers crossing between France and Spain through the Pyrenees. This historic use made it an important landmark for regional routes and passages.
The peak belongs to the FEEC100 collection, a selection of significant mountains chosen by the Federation of Catalan Hiking Entities. This recognition reflects its importance in the local mountaineering culture.
The ascent starts on marked trails from Fontpédrouse and takes approximately four hours to reach the summit. Summer months offer the best conditions for the hike, with more stable weather and clear paths.
The summit sits where two valleys meet, Riberola and Torrent de Carançà, creating different weather patterns and habitats on each side. This geography creates noticeably different plant life and climate conditions on either slope of the mountain.
