Refuge du Promontoire, rifugio del Massiccio des Écrins
The Refuge du Promontoire is a mountain hut situated at over 3000 meters on a rocky ridge within the Ecrins National Park. The structure clings to the rock face and offers views across the surrounding valleys and peaks in multiple directions.
The refuge was built many years ago and has served as a stopping point for mountaineers and travelers in the region. Its position on the ridge has made it a historic vantage point for mountain climbing expeditions and adventures.
The shelter's name refers to its location on a ridge that juts out like a ship's prow over the steep drop below. It serves as a gathering place for climbers who share stories and experiences of mountain adventures in this remote setting.
Visitors can reach the shelter on foot in about five hours from the village of La Bérarde by following marked trails that pass through rocky terrain and sometimes over glacier zones. Advance reservation is recommended, especially during the peak season from early July to mid-September when a hut keeper is present.
The shelter appears like a ship's prow jutting over the void and can be seen from great distances. Some adventurous visitors spend nights sleeping under open sky or directly on the rock face to experience the mountain landscape in its most raw and unfiltered form.
