Lake Ritsa, Mountain lake in Gudauta Municipality, Georgia.
Lake Riza is a mountain lake in Gudauta Municipality, Georgia, lying in a narrow valley surrounded by forested slopes of the Caucasus. The water fills an elongated basin at 884 meters elevation, enclosed by peaks that rise close to the shore.
The lake formed when a massive rockfall from the southeastern slope of the Gagra Range blocked the valley of the Lashipse River. This natural barrier dammed the water and created the present lake surface over many centuries.
The name Riza comes from the Abkhazian language and refers to a body of water that locals consider a symbol of untouched nature. Visitors walking along the shore notice the dense forest that frames the water, creating a sense of remoteness and calm.
The access road winds through dense forest and can be in poor condition in places, so visitors should allow extra time for the journey. Arriving early in the day helps to experience the morning stillness and to assess road conditions in daylight.
The water color shifts from green tones in spring to bluish shades in winter, linked to the amount of microscopic plankton that develops according to temperature and light conditions. This seasonal change creates a different visual experience each time you visit.
