Ritsa Nature Reserve, Protected mountain area in Gudauta District, Abkhazia
Ritsa Nature Reserve is a protected mountain area in the Caucasus that centers on Lake Ritsa and contains numerous waterfalls at varying elevations. The landscape transitions from lower forests to higher alpine zones, creating distinct natural zones.
The area was established as a protected reserve in 1930 and its boundaries and status changed under different administrations over the following decades. Today it remains an important conservation area in the region.
The reserve features the former summer residence of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, now under control of the Abkhazian government.
Access is mainly on foot or through organized tours, as most areas are only reachable this way. Visitors should prepare for changing mountain weather and bring appropriate gear for outdoor conditions.
One of the waterfalls in the area served as a filming location for adventure productions. The reserve remains less visited than other mountain reserves in the broader region.
