Kirnu, Steel roller coaster at Linnanmäki, Finland
Kirnu is a steel roller coaster at Linnanmäki amusement park in Helsinki, Finland, built around freely spinning cars that rotate throughout the ride. The track is relatively short and the layout compact, but the spinning motion gives the experience a different quality from a standard coaster.
Kirnu opened on April 27, 2007, as one of the first Intamin ZacSpin models ever built. The rotating car design came from manufacturer RCS GmbH and was a new concept at the time of its installation.
Linnanmäki, where Kirnu stands, is run by a foundation that uses park revenue to support child welfare work across Finland. Visitors spending a day at the park are, without realizing it, contributing to that cause.
The ride is inside Linnanmäki, which sits on hilly ground, so comfortable shoes make moving around much easier. The ride itself lasts only a few minutes, so lines can build up on busy days.
The cars spin based on how passengers are seated, with no mechanical system controlling the rotation. Because of this, the same track can feel completely different from one ride to the next.
