Alppila water towers

The Alppila water towers are two distinctly different structures standing near Tivolikuja street in Helsinki. The older square-shaped tower and the newer round tower showcase contrasting construction methods and architectural styles from their respective building periods.

The square tower was built in 1876 and underwent two later expansions that reflected the city's growing water needs. The round tower arrived decades later in the 1930s, adding a more modern design to complement the existing infrastructure.

These structures represent the evolution of Finnish urban infrastructure and stand as examples of engineering methods from different periods.

Both towers no longer operate as working water storage facilities. The structures remain visible and accessible from the outside for visitors exploring the Tivolikuja area.

The square tower originally held 13,000 cubic meters of water while the round tower stored 16,000 cubic meters, reflecting increased capacity demands. More than sixty years separated their completion, showcasing their markedly different technical standards.
