Zrmanja, River in Zadar County, Croatia
The Zrmanja is a river flowing through northern Dalmatia for approximately 69 kilometers, beginning in the Pljesevica mountains and reaching the Adriatic Sea near Novigradsko bay. Along its course, the water carves deep canyons through limestone and creates several waterfalls formed by tufa rock deposits.
The Romans called this river Tedanius and established settlements along its banks to use its water for farming and transportation needs. These ancient connections between people and water shaped the region in ways that continue today.
Local communities have shaped their way of life around this waterway for generations, and you can still see how they interact with it today.
The river is accessible for water activities from spring through autumn, with main access points near Obrovac where you can find equipment rentals. Guided tours are available at these locations if you prefer not to go on your own.
The water has carved out an impressive canyon system that descends about 200 meters into the rock below. This depth makes it one of the deepest river canyons in the area.
