Hajnóczy Cave

Hajnóczy Cave, Protected cave in Cserépfalu, Hungary

Hajnóczy Cave is a protected limestone cave in Cserépfalu with an underground network that extends across considerable distances and contains multiple chambers. The site sits within Bükk National Park on a rocky wooded slope.

The cave was discovered in 1971 when students from a local school explored a narrow opening that had been overlooked for centuries. This find brought the site to the attention of the public and scientific community.

The cave is named after József Hajnóczy, an 18th-century Hungarian jurist and reformer who shaped the country's legal thinking. Local people recognize this name as part of their region's intellectual heritage.

The entrance to the cave is very small and requires some care to navigate. Visitors should arrive with sturdy footwear, flashlights, and warm clothing, as conditions underground are tight and cool.

Among the various chambers are sections with special names like the Dance Room and the Wonder Chamber, each with its own structure and appearance. These named areas reveal how the underground landscape changes as you move deeper into the cave.
