Füzérkő Vára, Medieval castle in northern Zemplén mountains, Hungary.

Füzérkő Vára is a medieval stone fortress built on a high rocky cliff in northern Hungary's Zemplén Mountains. The fortress features defensive walls and towers arranged to follow the natural contours of the hilltop.

The fortress first appeared in written records around 1264 when the Aba family held it before it became royal property. By the 16th century, it served as a secure location for protecting important valuables during times of political upheaval.

This fortress served as a power center for regional lords and played a key role in controlling the surrounding valleys. The ruins reflect how important such hilltop strongholds were for people living in the area.

Access to the fortress starts from a parking area near the village, with a walking trail leading uphill to the ruins. The path is steep in places, so sturdy footwear is recommended for the climb.

Excavations that began in 1970 have revealed the fortress was built and rebuilt across several centuries with changing construction methods. These findings show how the site was continuously adapted and improved over time.
