Peskő Cave

Peskő Cave is an archaeological site in Felsőtárkány that extends approximately 62 meters into the hillside. The entrance measures roughly 8 meters high and 2 meters wide, located at an elevation of 752 meters.

Early archaeological excavations in 1912 by Jenő Hillebrand revealed layers containing remains from different prehistoric cultures. The findings came from Aurignacian, Bükk, and Kyjatice periods, showing long human use of the site.

The cave contained tools from the Upper Paleolithic Aurignacian culture, implements from the Neolithic Bükk culture, and artifacts from the Bronze Age Kyjatice culture.

The cave is open to visitors and managed by Bükki National Park Directorate with legal protections in place. Check ahead for current access conditions and any restrictions before your visit.

Over 400 cave bear bones were discovered within the cave's sediment layers during excavation, representing some of the most important findings from this period in the region. The remains also included fossils from 24 different animal species that lived in the area long ago.
