Hanita, Agricultural kibbutz in Western Galilee, Israel
Hanita is a kibbutz perched on a hilltop about 327 meters above sea level in Western Galilee. The settlement sits about 15 kilometers northeast of Nahariya and overlooks the Mediterranean Sea.
The kibbutz was founded on March 21, 1938, during the Tower and Stockade operation, when 400 Jewish pioneers carried construction materials up by hand. This rapid founding happened as a response to the political tensions of that era.
The Tower and Stockade Museum displays films and exhibits about early Jewish settlements, including artifacts from a Byzantine church mosaic. The collection shows how the pioneers lived day to day and their efforts in building the community.
The site is walkable on foot, though the elevation can be tiring. Two industrial facilities, Kotlab and Hanita Lenses, operate on the kibbutz, but they typically do not offer public tours.
Julius Craft Distillery, originally founded in 2008, relocated to Hanita in 2017 and produces spirits, gin, and honey-based liqueurs. The operation uses locally available ingredients and has become part of the kibbutz identity.
