Hassan, District capital in Karnataka, India
Hassan is a district capital in Karnataka state, located 182 kilometers from Bangalore and 171 kilometers from Mangalore. The city sits on a plateau at 972 meters elevation and connects rural areas with larger centers in southern India.
The settlement arose in the 11th century under the Hoysala Empire, which established a seat of power here. After the Hoysala decline, control passed between several dynasties until the region came under British administration in the 18th century.
The name comes from the Hindu goddess Hasanamba, whose temple opens once a year for ten days and then draws thousands of pilgrims. In the streets you hear mainly Kannada, while markets and neighborhoods show the coexistence of different communities.
The railway station sits centrally and offers regular connections to Bangalore, including express trains that cover the route in a few hours. For trips around the area, local buses and taxis run to nearby temples and villages.
The city hosts a large fuel depot that supplies fourteen districts in Karnataka and forms a hub in the regional distribution network. Travelers often see tanker trucks on approach roads, transporting fuel to remote areas.
