Bahraich, Administrative city in Uttar Pradesh, India
Bahraich is an administrative city in Bahraich district in Uttar Pradesh, located on the eastern bank of the Saryu River and spread across flat alluvial plains in the northern part of the state. The city connects older residential quarters with narrow lanes and bazaars around the center to newer settlements extending toward the outskirts.
The settlement belonged to the ancient Kosala kingdom and later came under rule by the Mauryas, the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughals before passing to British control. In the 20th century it developed into an administrative center in independent India with a focus on agriculture and trade.
The name comes from the Sanskrit Vyaghra-puri, meaning tiger city, and recalls the natural surroundings of the region. Today residents gather at the ghats along the Saryu, where families walk in the evening and fishermen cast their nets.
The railway station with three platforms connects the city by rail to larger destinations in the region and offers both broad gauge and meter gauge service. Visitors should note that the climate becomes very warm in summer, while the months from October to March offer more comfortable temperatures.
The Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary nearby shelters wild tigers and elephants that live in the grasslands along the Girwa River. Few travelers know that permits for guided safaris into this protected area can be arranged from the city.
