Baramulla district, Administrative district in Kashmir Valley, India
The district spans 4,190 square kilometers across the Kashmir Valley, with the Jhelum River flowing through its capital city of Baramulla.
In 1947, the district experienced significant changes during the Partition of India, when tribal forces from Pakistan attacked the region before Indian troops arrived.
The district holds religious monuments from multiple faiths, including Hindu pilgrimage sites, Buddhist monasteries, and the shrine of Syed Janbaz Wali.
The district contains sixteen administrative subdivisions called tehsils, with Pattan being the largest, managing local governance and development projects.
The name Baramulla originates from Sanskrit words meaning 'Boar's Molar Place,' referring to ancient Hindu texts about Lord Vishnu's mythological connection to the region.
