Shankaragaurishvara Temple, Pattan

The Shankaragaurishvara Temple is a Hindu shrine located in Pattan featuring a square inner sanctum with three-lobed recesses set into its walls. The entrance columns display elaborate carved decorations that enhance the overall architectural composition.

The temple was built between 883 and 902 AD under King Shankaravarman of the Utpala dynasty. It was constructed in Shankarapattana, which served as the capital at that time.

The temple displays the distinctive architectural style of Kashmir with intricate carvings on its entrance porch and balanced structural forms. These details reflect the skilled craftsmanship that flourished in this region during its construction period.

The site is located roughly 27 kilometers from Srinagar and can be reached by regular buses or taxis departing from the city center. The access route is straightforward, making the archaeological location easy to visit.

The complex houses an underground cellular passage and features a peristyle layout, with numerous architectural elements still buried beneath ground level. These hidden components make it difficult to fully understand the original design.
