Gulmarg Golf Club, Golf club in Gulmarg, India.
Gulmarg Golf Club is a mountain golf course in the Jammu and Kashmir region of northern India, set on an open highland meadow. The course has 18 holes laid out across the rolling grassland, along with a driving range and practice area.
A British officer laid out the original course in 1890, starting with just six holes. The first organized championship was held here in 1922, as the course gradually grew in size and reputation.
The course sits in a meadow that locals call Gulmarg, which means 'meadow of flowers' in Kashmiri. In summer, the same open ground that fills with golfers also draws families and walkers who simply come to enjoy the space.
The course is at high elevation, so give yourself time to adjust before playing a full round. Weather on the mountain can shift quickly, and even summer days can turn cold, so layered clothing is a good idea.
This course is considered one of the highest 18-hole golf courses in the world, which sets it apart from nearly every other course a visitor might have played before. Because the air is thinner at this elevation, a golf ball travels farther than usual, which catches many players off guard when judging distance.
