Kheer Bhawani, Hindu temple in Tulmulla, Ganderbal district, India
Kheer Bhawani is a Hindu temple in Ganderbal district of the northern state of Jammu and Kashmir, India. The place of worship rises above a natural spring that is edged by flat stone slabs and surrounded by old chinar trees.
Maharaja Pratap Singh ordered the temple built in the year 1912, after the site had been known as a sacred place for centuries. Later renovation work was carried out under Maharaja Hari Singh to preserve the building.
Devotees from across the region bring sweet milk pudding as an offering and leave it beside the stone edges of the spring. Worshippers gather especially during the spring festival, when families pray together and touch the holy water.
The temple complex lies about 25 kilometers east of the city of Srinagar and can be reached via the main road. Visitors should expect larger crowds during the main festival times in spring and plan extra time accordingly.
The spring water changes its color naturally, which locals interpret as a sign of coming events in the region. Some report that the water can shift from clear to milky or even dark.
