Madhepura, human settlement in India
Madhepura is a town in eastern India located in the state of Bihar, situated in a region with distinct geographical features. The town has a population of around 70,000 residents and is surrounded by other districts such as Araria and Supaul to the north, and Khagaria and Bhagalpur to the south.
The region was part of the kingdom of Videha in ancient times, a culturally rich and politically powerful center. Kings known as Janakas ruled during the late Vedic period, around 1100 to 500 BCE, leaving a legacy still told in local stories today.
The name Madhepura comes from "Madhyapura," meaning "center place," reflecting its position in the middle of the surrounding area. The Maithili language is spoken daily here and forms a core part of local identity and community life.
The town is well served by public transportation with buses and taxis running regularly to nearby places, and a train station on the Saharsa-Purnia line connecting to larger cities like Patna. Two main highways, NH 231 and NH 131, pass through the town, offering good road access to important nearby destinations.
The town is home to a notable Electric Locomotive Factory, a joint venture between India and France that has been producing high-power trains for Indian railways since late 2017. This modern facility shows how traditional places can adapt and develop by welcoming new industries.
