Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project, Nuclear power plant project in Ratnagiri district, India
The Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project is a planned nuclear power station being developed along the Arabian Sea coast in Maharashtra. The site will house six European Pressurized Reactors, each designed to generate 1,650 MW of electricity.
Planning for this nuclear station started in 1985, with India and France signing an agreement in 2010 to construct third-generation reactors. The project has faced multiple delays over the years and construction has not yet begun.
Local communities and fishermen expressed concerns about the project's impact on traditional fishing activities and marine life in the Arabian Sea waters.
The site is located in a coastal area with access to water for cooling and established infrastructure for power distribution. Visitors should note this is a development project and the grounds may not be accessible for public visits.
If completed, the facility would generate 9,900 MW of power total, making it the largest nuclear power complex in the world. This would surpass Japan's Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant, currently the biggest single complex.
