The temple site gained recognition in the 16th century when a Muslim shepherd discovered the sacred cave and shared its location with local communities.
During the 45-day annual pilgrimage period in July and August, thousands of Hindu devotees trek to worship at this significant religious site.
Two routes lead to the temple: a 12-kilometer path from Baltal base camp and a longer route through Pahalgam in South Kashmir.
The ice formation of Shiva Lingam changes size according to lunar phases, reaching its maximum during the full moon and diminishing during new moon.
