Uttarkashi district

Uttarkashi district extends across mountainous terrain within the Himalayan range, featuring diverse ecosystems and agricultural areas along numerous river valleys.

The region formed part of independent principalities until the 15th century when King Ajai Pal consolidated them into the unified Garhwal kingdom.

The district functions as an entry point to religious destinations including Yamunotri and Gangotri, drawing numerous pilgrims throughout the year.

The district contains six administrative tehsils: Puraula, Rajgarhi, Dunda, Mori, Chinyali Saur, and Bhatwari, each managing local governance and services.

Local communities maintain strong military traditions, with significant numbers of residents serving in the Indian army since the British colonial period.
