Likir Monastery, Buddhist monastery in Leh district, India
The monastery stands on a hilltop at 3700 meters elevation, positioned 52 kilometers west of Leh near the Indus River valley.
Lama Duwang Chosje founded the monastery in 1065 under the direction of Lhachen Gyalpo, the fifth king of Ladakh.
The monastery contains two assembly halls with sacred statues of Amitabha, Sakyamuni, Bodhisattva, Tsongkhapa, and Maitreya Buddha.
Visitors can reach the monastery by taking a right turn at the welcome gate on the Leh-Srinagar highway and following a 6-kilometer link road.
A 23-meter-high gilded statue of Maitreya Buddha, completed in 1999, stands prominently within the monastery grounds.
