Sonamarg, Mountain settlement in Ganderbal District, India.
Sonamarg is a settlement in Ganderbal district, India, located in a high valley surrounded by glaciers and forested slopes. The river runs through the center and forms several shallow sections where paths and simple lodgings are found.
Caravans used this valley for centuries on the way from Kashmir toward Central Asia. The route lost its importance when modern roads created other connections.
The name means "meadow of gold" and refers to the yellow flowers that cover the fields in summer. Herders bring their flocks here during the warm season and set up camps near the grasslands.
The road here usually closes from November to April because of snow, so the best time is from May to October. Warm clothing is advisable even in summer, as temperatures at this elevation vary widely.
Locals say that the ground here once held gold flakes carried down by mountain streams. Today only a few visitors search for traces in the sediments along the river.
