Bandarpunch, Mountain peak in Garhwal Himalayas, India.
Bandarpunch is a mountain peak in the Garhwal Himalayas at 6,316 meters (20,728 feet) elevation and part of a massif with three summits in Uttarkashi district. The group rises above alpine terrain marked by glaciers, valleys, and steep slopes.
The first ascent to the summit took place in 1950, led by Major General Harold Williams with a team that included mountaineer Tenzing Norgay. This successful climb established the mountain as a known destination for climbers in the Himalayas.
The name translates to 'Tail of Hanuman', referring to a Hindu myth where the deity extinguished his burning tail at this location during a battle.
The trek begins from Taluka village and passes through Hargaon and Seema to reach Ruinsara Tal basecamp in the foothills. Most visitors should plan for seven to eight days to complete the full ascent and descent, including acclimatization time.
A glacier on the north side feeds the Ruinsar Gad stream, which eventually flows into the Yamuna River. This water connection links the high peaks to the broader river system of the region.
