Central Gujarat, Geographical region in western India.
Central Gujarat is a geographical region in western India, lying between the cities of Vadodara and Ahmedabad across eight administrative districts. The land is mostly flat agricultural plains crossed by several rivers, including the Mahi and the Sabarmati, with a mix of smaller towns and rural settlements spread throughout.
The region was home to early settlements along its river valleys and served as a passage for trade routes between the coasts and the interior of the subcontinent. Over time, Solanki rulers and later Mughal administration shaped the towns that grew along these waterways.
Navratri is celebrated every year with Garba and Dandiya dances held in open courtyards and public squares across the region. During this period, entire neighborhoods come alive at night, and visitors can join the dancing without any formality.
Major highways and train lines run through the region, making travel between the main towns straightforward. For smaller villages and rural areas, a private vehicle or local bus is a better option, as connections can be less frequent off the main routes.
The Ratan Mahal Wildlife Sanctuary in the eastern part of the region shelters sloth bears, leopards, and migratory birds in deciduous forests that few travelers think to visit. The sloth bear population here is one of the more stable in Gujarat, making it a good spot for those specifically interested in observing this animal.
