Hill Fort Palace, building in India
Hill Fort Palace is a large residence on a hill in Hyderabad built in 1915 by Sir Nizamat Jung, featuring European castle architecture with 40 rooms, three grand banquet halls, and Tudor-style windows that recall medieval fortifications. The building contains an impressive entrance hall with L-shaped staircases and arched corridors reminiscent of old European structures, set across approximately 6 acres of land.
The palace was built in 1915 by Sir Nizamat Jung, a lawyer seeking clean air for his asthma, with design inspired by Cambridge architecture and castles from Walter Scott novels, and was sold back to the Nizam after about 15 years. Following India's control of Hyderabad in 1955, it ceased to be a royal home and operated as the Ritz Hotel until the government took control in 1997, leaving it vacant since then.
The palace was once home to Prince Moazzam Jah, known for his passion for poetry and evening gatherings where poets and nobles would gather to recite and compose verses. The songs he wrote continue to be performed by singers in Hyderabad today, keeping his artistic legacy alive within the city's cultural memory.
The palace is centrally located in Hyderabad near Naubhat Pahad and easy to reach, though large steps lead to the main entrance and the site is currently inaccessible as the building stands abandoned and awaiting restoration. Visitors should know the property is not open to the public at present, but the exterior architecture remains visible and its location near other historic buildings makes it worth viewing from outside while exploring the surrounding area.
The palace was designed by Sir Nizamat Jung with generously proportioned rooms to promote air circulation and was fitted with a swimming pool in the 1920s, which was uncommon in India at that time. These design choices show how innovative ideas blended with European influences to create an unconventional residence ahead of its era.
