Rohtasgarh Fort, Fortress in Bihar, India
The granite stone fortress stands on a hilltop in the Son River valley, featuring 83 gates across its 42-square-kilometer grounds.
The Gahadavala dynasty constructed the fortress, which later became a strategic base for Sher Shah Suri in 1539 with a garrison of 10,000 soldiers.
The fortress contains multiple architectural elements including the Takht-e-Badshahi, Diwaan-e-Khas, and the Jamia Masjid built in 1543.
The Government of Bihar manages the site, which remains open to visitors interested in exploring its military architecture and historical structures.
The fortress includes the Hathiya Pol entrance gate, decorated with elephant sculptures, and contains an intricate network of underground tunnels.
