Armament Research and Development Establishment, defence laboratory under DRDO
The Armament Research and Development Establishment is a government laboratory in Pune dedicated to developing weapons and defense systems for the Indian armed forces. The facility contains multiple labs and workshops where engineers and scientists work on rifles, missiles, artillery systems, and tank armaments.
Founded in 1958 to make India self-sufficient in weapon production, the establishment moved to its current location in Pashan, a Pune suburb, in 1966. Since then it has developed major systems including the 7.62 mm self-loading rifle, the INSAS rifle, and the Pinaka rocket launcher.
The site is not open to the public and requires special authorization to visit due to the sensitive nature of the research. Visitors can explore the broader Pune area, which has good transportation connections and numerous hotels and accommodations.
The facility has also worked on aircraft safety systems, including ejection seats and canopy severance systems for fighter jets such as the HAL Tejas. Beyond traditional weapons, it is developing advanced technologies like electromagnetic railguns still undergoing testing.
