Nandur Madhmeshwar Bird Sanctuary, Bird sanctuary and Ramsar site in Nashik, India
The sanctuary features diverse wetlands, grasslands, and forests spread across 100 square kilometers in Maharashtra's Nashik district.
In 1982, ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali visited the site and recommended its designation as a sanctuary, leading to official protection in 1986.
The sanctuary maintains traditional connections with local farming communities who participate in conservation efforts and ecological preservation programs.
The winter months from October to March offer excellent opportunities for observing migratory birds, with peak populations reaching 35,000 birds.
The wetland hosts over 240 bird species, including the Purple Moorhen, which earned the nickname Queen of Nandur Madhmeshwar.
