Jabalpur railway division, Railway division in Jabalpur, India
Jabalpur railway division is an administrative unit of the West Central Railway zone, overseeing dozens of stations across central India. It covers the major junction at Jabalpur and a wide range of smaller stations that link cities, towns, and remote areas across the region.
This division was created in 1952, during the reorganization of Indian Railways following independence. Jabalpur was chosen as its center partly because the city already sat at the crossing of key rail corridors connecting different parts of the country.
Several stations in this division sit close to wildlife areas such as Kanha and Pench, making the train a practical gateway for visitors heading into the forests of central India. Arriving by rail often gives travelers their first sense of how dense and remote this part of the country feels.
Jabalpur junction is the main station in the division and the best equipped, while smaller stops along the routes can be very basic. It is worth allowing extra time for connections, as trains in this part of India often run behind schedule.
One section of the division's network passes through the Satpura hills, making it one of the more scenic rail routes in central India. Some of the bridges and structures along this stretch date back to the British colonial period and are still in daily use.
