Tell Rashid, Archaeological mound in Diyala Governorate, Iraq
Tell Rashid is a settlement mound in Diyala Governorate in northeastern Iraq that rises noticeably from the surrounding Mesopotamian plain. The site contains visible layers of occupation with building foundations and debris scattered across its slopes.
Archaeological excavations in the 1970s revealed four distinct occupation levels showing how people lived and rebuilt at this location over generations. These layers document changes in building techniques and settlement patterns during early periods.
The site contains traditional Ubaid tripartite houses with central halls flanked by smaller rooms, along with child burial remains and buttressed structures.
The site sits in an agricultural region with hilly terrain nearby, so visitors should expect uneven ground when walking around. The cooler months are best for exploring since the sun can be intense during other seasons.
Excavations uncovered small clay figures and tools with unusual material residues that hint at connections to distant regions. These finds suggest that people living here had contact with communities in other parts of the early world.
