Province of Sondrio

The Province of Sondrio stretches across 3,212 square kilometers of alpine terrain between Switzerland and the provinces of Como, Lecco, Bergamo, and Brescia.

Following the fall of the Lombard Kingdom, the region became part of the Holy Roman Empire, with the Capitanei of Vizzola controlling Valtellina from 1040.

The province maintains 78 communes where regional festivals celebrate local wines, including Sassella and Grumello, produced in the northern alpine slopes.

The area connects multiple valleys through an extensive network of roads and railways, providing access to winter sports destinations and natural parks.

Local farmers have engineered extensive vineyard terraces along mountain slopes, creating a system of dry stone walls that shape the agricultural landscape.
