Basilica of San Clemente, Minor basilica in Monti district, Rome, Italy.

The Basilica of San Clemente features three distinct architectural levels, including a Roman temple, a 4th-century church, and the current 12th-century structure.

Following the destruction by Norman forces in 1084, Cardinal Anastasius initiated the reconstruction of the basilica in 1100, covering the previous structure.

The basilica displays extensive 12th-century mosaics depicting the Triumph of the Cross, complemented by Cosmatesque marble floors and ancient Roman columns.

Visitors can purchase tickets to explore the archaeological underground levels, which include Roman structures and a temple dedicated to the god Mithra.

The lower basilica contains frescoes with early Italian vernacular text, making it a significant reference point for studying the development of the Italian language.
