Refuge Walter-Bonatti, Mountain refuge in Courmayeur, Italy.
Refuge Walter-Bonatti sits at 2025 meters (6644 feet) in Val Ferret with direct views of the Fréboudze glacier and Mont Blanc massif. The shelter functions as sleeping accommodation for mountaineers and trekkers, serving as a rest point along longer hiking routes.
The mountain shelter was built in 1998 and emerged from four mountaineers' shared passion for alpinism. It was named after a renowned Italian climber and represents a legacy rooted in climbing tradition.
The shelter serves as a gathering place for trekkers crossing the Tour du Mont Blanc, where people from different countries meet and share their mountain journeys. Visitors often exchange stories about the contrasting landscapes they have walked through in the three bordering regions.
In winter, visitors reach the refuge through a marked path from Planpincieux using snowshoes or cross-country skis. Summer trekking is more straightforward, though the high altitude still demands proper equipment and physical preparation.
The shelter operates with renewable energy systems and sources local ingredients while maintaining winter accommodations without permanent staff on site. This blend of sustainability and self-sufficiency creates an unusually independent operation in the high alpine setting.
