Toledo, Metro station in Naples, Italy
Toledo is a metro station in central Naples, located deep underground beneath the busy street of the same name and serving Line 1 of the city's transit network. The station is organized across several levels connected by long escalators, with platforms sitting far below street level.
Toledo station opened in 2012 as part of a broader effort to renew Naples' metro network, which had been expanding slowly since the 1990s under the name "Stazioni dell'Arte". Each station along the line was handed to a different architect, giving the network an artistic identity rather than a standard transit look.
Toledo station sits beneath one of Naples' most walked streets, and the art inside reflects the sea and light of the city above. A large mosaic near the lower platforms gives the feeling of being underwater, which surprises many passengers who are simply passing through.
The station is very deep underground, so allow extra time when using the escalators to reach the platforms, especially if you want to take in the artwork on the way. It is fully accessible, with elevators available at every level for those who need them.
Toledo was named the most beautiful metro station in Europe by an international jury, which comes as a surprise to most commuters who pass through without looking up. The design by Spanish architect Oscar Tusquets Blanca was inspired by water and light, themes that run through every level of the station from top to bottom.
