Lac Pellaud, Alpine lake in Rhêmes-Notre-Dame, Italy
Lac Pellaud is a mountain lake in Rhêmes-Notre-Dame situated at approximately 1,870 meters elevation surrounded by larch and spruce forests. The body of water sits within the Parco Nazionale Gran Paradiso and forms a notable part of this high alpine landscape.
A hydroelectric facility was built near the lake in the 1920s to supply electricity to surrounding hamlets including Pont, Pellaud, and Chaudanne. This development reflects how early power generation solutions were implemented in these remote mountain areas.
Villages such as Oreiller and Bruil near the lake display traditional mountain architecture with buildings that shape the valley landscape. People continue to inhabit and use these settlements much as they have for generations, maintaining the character of the highland communities.
The lake is accessible via a marked trail starting from Chanavey hamlet that crosses a bridge and follows designated paths. Visitors should prepare for alpine conditions and wear sturdy footwear, as the terrain is uneven and weather-dependent.
The lake and surrounding waters provide habitat for red frogs and trout populations adapted to cold alpine conditions. On the slopes around the lake, visitors may encounter wild ibex herds navigating the rocky terrain.
