Ex Pastificio Pantanella, Industrial heritage building near Porta Maggiore, Rome, Italy.
The Ex Pastificio Pantanella is an industrial complex near Porta Maggiore featuring large cylindrical silos, storage buildings, and processing halls in the Prenestino-Labicano district. The site now contains residential units and retains much of its original factory layout and architectural character.
The pasta factory opened in 1935 and operated as a major food production center until 1970. Following its closure, the complex was gradually converted to accommodate residential use.
The site shows how an industrial complex became a residential neighborhood, reflecting the way Rome transformed its manufacturing areas into living spaces. Visitors can see how the community adapted old factory structures to serve new purposes.
The complex sits at the start of Via Casilina with convenient access to public transportation and nearby shops and services. Much of the site is private residential space today, though the outer factory structures and distinctive silos remain visible from the street.
During renovation work from 1998 to 2001, the distinctive industrial architecture was deliberately kept while the interiors were completely modernized. This makes it a rare example where old factory structures and modern residential spaces exist side by side.
