Yamatokoriyama, Historical castle city in Nara Prefecture, Japan
Yamatokōriyama sits between two rivers in Nara Prefecture and covers an area with hills in the western part. The city consists of several neighborhoods, including the old castle quarter with narrow streets and newer residential areas on the outskirts.
The settlement emerged during the Sengoku period as a castle town and grew under the Yanagisawa clan into the center of Kōriyama Domain. The family governed here throughout the Edo era and shaped the urban fabric until the 19th century.
The temple preserves tea ceremonies from samurai times that guests can experience today in traditional rooms. The former castle town takes its name from the historic Yamato district, which evolved over centuries into its present form.
The city is reachable by several train lines, including JR West and Kintetsu connections to Osaka and Kyoto. Travelers will find accommodation and restaurants in different neighborhoods, from the historic core to the outer districts.
Goldfish breeding has a tradition here spanning centuries, celebrated each April with a nationwide competition. Breeders from across Japan travel to present their finest specimens and exchange techniques.
