Akashi Strait, Maritime strait between Honshu and Awaji Island, Japan

The Akashi Strait is a waterway between Honshu and Awaji Island that joins the Seto Inland Sea to Osaka Bay. It stretches about 4 kilometers across and reaches depths exceeding 100 meters in places.

The area gained special importance after the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995, which activated the Nojima Fault lying beneath the strait and extending across Awaji Island. This event changed how people understood the geological forces shaping the region.

Fishing families have worked these waters for generations, maintaining their traditional craft and knowledge of the currents that make this area rich in marine life. The strait remains an important place where local communities connect to the sea and its resources.

A major bridge crosses the strait and makes it easy to travel between Kobe and Awaji Island. The best views of the waterway come from the bridge itself or from viewpoints along the nearby coasts.

The tidal currents here rank among the fastest in Japanese waters, reaching speeds around 4.5 meters per second. These powerful flows make navigation challenging and shape where marine creatures live and feed.
