Yakumo Station, railway station in Yakumo, Futami district, Hokkaidō Prefecture, Japan
Yakumo Station is a railway station in the town of Yakumo on the island of Hokkaido and part of the Hakodate Main Line designated as station H54. The station has three tracks: one for trains heading toward Mori and Hakodate, one for trains going to Oshamambe, Higashi-Muroran, and Sapporo, and another for service operations. Two platforms, including an island platform, are connected by a footbridge to allow easy movement between the tracks.
The station opened in November 1903 and has served the community for more than a century. In 1987, following the privatization of Japan National Railways, it became part of JR Hokkaido, the company now managing rail operations in northern Japan.
The station's name reflects the region's heritage. Daily scenes here show the simple routine of commuters and visitors who use this place as a natural part of their lives.
The station is easy to reach during daytime hours and has facilities for visitors with different needs, including step-free routes and wheelchair-accessible toilets. Visitors should be aware that stairs lead to the platform for Sapporo-bound trains, though assistance devices are available that require extra time.
The station sits in a quiet, rural area where life moves at a slow, steady pace. This out-of-the-way location makes it a real window into the everyday life of Japanese countryside regions, where few international visitors venture.
