Ota, Special ward in Tokyo, Japan
Ōta is a special ward in southeastern Tokyo, Japan. The area stretches from the shores of the bay to the inner residential neighborhoods, showing a mosaic of industrial zones, parks and residential streets.
Two former regions, Ōmori and Kamata, merged into a single ward in 1947 following the reorganization of the metropolitan administration. This restructuring followed the post-war reforms that redefined Tokyo's old city limits.
The name Ōta comes from two former districts, Ōmori and Kamata, whose opening syllables were fused into a new word. Today this name links the different neighborhoods that stretch from the busy Haneda Airport to the quiet residential areas inland.
The ward office sits near Kamata station, a major transport hub with multiple train lines and bus connections. Individual neighborhoods offer shops and services, with opening hours varying by area.
The waterfront areas around Haneda show remnants of the old nori seaweed fields that once covered much of the coastline. A few small patches are still farmed by local families who maintain a traditional harvest.
