Kokura Station, Railway station in Kokurakita-ku, Japan
Kokura Station is a railway station in Kokurakita-ku, Japan, serving as a major hub in northern Kyushu where high-speed rail lines meet local railways and the city monorail system. The complex spreads across several levels with platforms for express trains and regional services, plus direct connections to the urban monorail through covered walkways.
The facility opened in 1891 near Kokura Castle to serve regional lines along the coast. In 1958 authorities relocated the entire structure about 700 meters east to accommodate growing rail traffic and prepare for future high-speed connections.
The station complex incorporates traditional Japanese design elements while serving as a gateway to Kitakyushu's museums, theaters, and entertainment districts.
Ticket counters operate from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM, while automated machines sell tickets and travel passes between 4:50 AM and 11:20 PM. Signage in multiple languages helps with navigation between different levels and train types.
As the second largest terminal in Kyushu, this location marks where trains switch between the Sanyo and Kyushu sections of the high-speed network and change direction. Travelers often notice the shift in announcements and crew as trains pass through this transition point.
