Ōsumi Province, Historical province in southeastern Kyūshū, Japan
Ōsumi Province was a historical administrative region in southeastern Kyūshū that covered the eastern portion of what is now Kagoshima Prefecture. The territory also included an island chain located in the Philippine Sea that formed part of its domain.
The province was established in 713 when the Japanese government separated this territory from a larger neighboring region. This division occurred during a period when Japan was reorganizing its administrative boundaries.
The people who lived here spoke their own dialect, noticeably different from standard Japanese and the speech used in neighboring areas. This linguistic distinctness shaped local identity for many generations.
Today this area forms part of modern Kagoshima Prefecture and is accessible by various means of transport. To explore the historical sites and islands, visitors should check local information about ferry services and bus connections.
One of the islands in this province played a key role in introducing firearms to Japan when European traders arrived there. This event fundamentally changed how warfare was conducted in Japan.
