Port of Yokohama, International maritime port in Yokohama, Japan.
Port of Yokohama is a major seaport on Tokyo Bay, comprising multiple piers and wharves with dozens of berths. The facility stretches across natural waterfront and artificial islands equipped with cargo cranes, warehouses and container terminals.
The port opened on June 2, 1859, for foreign trade, marking the start of Japan's international commerce following a treaty with the United States. The harbor area grew through land reclamation during the 20th century and became the country's largest container gateway.
The port maintains active relationships with international sister ports, facilitating maritime knowledge exchange and strengthening global maritime connections.
The harbor area is large and includes both industrial zones and public areas along the waterfront promenade. Visitors can walk along certain sections while commercial terminals remain restricted to authorized personnel only.
Some harbor sections were built on reclaimed land created from construction debris and dredged material. These artificial islands expanded usable space considerably and created new quays for larger vessels.
